Why did Jesus choose to die and how should we respond?So What Do I Do?

Please look carefully at how I expressed the first part of this question: Jesus chose to die. He was not caught up in the circumstances of his arrest and so struggled to be free from his captors. Instead, He went to his death to solve a massive problem.

The problem is this: humans are separated from God because of their sin, or wrongdoing which can be as seemingly minor as telling a small lie, or as serious as committing murder. No one is exempt from this for as the Bible says: all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Humans are accountable for their sin because they choose to what is wrong, even if they know what is the right thing to do, for they have free will.

The problem is made worse by the fact that the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). This means spiritual death in that the sinner is separated from God in hell and will be forever unless he/she does something about it.

The good news is that God loves people more than they can ever imagine and provided a solution: For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16). This means that Jesus died in our place, thus receiving on Himself the punishment we deserve for our sins. As Romans 5:8 says, But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Our response should be to believe that Jesus died in our place and to receive Him as not only the one who saved us from being forever separated from God, but as the Lord, or Master of our lives. This means turning our back on or repenting of our sin and asking Jesus to help us to live a life that pleases Him. Do not be frightened of making Jesus the Lord of your life. He is the one who loves you completely and who made you, so His lordship will be perfect for you!

You can receive Jesus right now as you Lord and Saviour by praying this prayer sincerely:

Dear Lord Jesus,

I am sorry for my life of sin and I repent and turn away from my sin. I believe that Jesus is God the Son in human form and that He died on the cross to take the punishment I deserve for my sin. Thank you for doing that for me. Thank you Father God for allowing your Son to do this for me. I also believe Jesus rose from the dead to show that He is Lord and that I could have new life. Please Jesus, be my Lord and Saviour and give me your Holy Spirit so that I may live a life that pleases you.

Amen.

If you have said that prayer sincerely, you are now a child of God and God the Father is your Father. Welcome! You are also born again in the sense that God has given you a new nature, which wishes to please Him and not sin. You also have God the Holy Spirit living inside you to guide you and know the love of God for you.

The next step is to buy or borrow a Bible and start reading it. I would suggest you begin with the Book of Mark. In addition, find a church and introduce yourself to the minister as a new believer. Please choose a church that believes that Jesus is God who died for our sins and that believes the Bible is God’s word. If you have a Christian friend, ask him or her to take you to his/her church. You can also start praying knowing that God will listen to you.
